BSD Validator prototype presented at APHL 2025

We’re pleased to share that our recent research on digital assessment of Dried Blood Spot (DBS) samples was accepted and presented at APHL. As part of this 2026 development, we were proud to demonstrate a working prototype of our custom-designed benchtop instrument—developed to enhance quality control in newborn screening (NBS) laboratories.

By integrating dual-sided optical scanning, high-speed image processing, and statistical analysis, the system enables rapid, objective evaluation of DBS card samples—addressing a critical challenge in high-throughput environments where manual inspection is limited.

Key highlights from the poster include:

▪️ Computation of 37 statistical metrics per card, including shape, saturation, and spatial consistency

▪️Identification of key indicators such as roundness, area ratio, and mean hue for assessing sample quality

▪️A tiered framework for digital classification of spot acceptability, supporting both primary and secondary screening workflows

This solution aims to reduce delays caused by sample recollection and improve consistency across collection sites and screening centres. We’re proud to contribute to advancing pre-analytical reliability in NBS and excited to continue refining the system through further evaluation and collaboration.
