Features of BSD DBS and Sample Media Punchers

Punch data files are generated for sample tracking and traceability. The BSD output files can be configured to interface with a wide range of LIMS software. Barcodes of samples are scanned prior to punching and plate barcodes can be scanned for inclusion in the punch file. Sample delivery into the plate is confirmed using an optical sensor.

Minimization of sample carry-over is achieved using features for automatic and routine cleaning of the punch area. A separate waste container on the plate deck allows a programmable number and frequency of cleaning punches to be performed as part of the test sequence. An optional dust extraction system vacuums paper dust from the punching area. The Quick Release Punch and Die can easily be removed and cleaned.

BSD Punchers are compatible with a wide range of collection device and plates. The tray height can be set to accommodate standard 96 well or deep well plates or test tube adaptors. Optional tray adaptors are available to allow combinations of plate heights and tube adaptors in the same test run.

All BSD punchers are computer controlled and comes with flexible and easy to use software to suit a wide range of laboratory procedures and processes.
The software is programmable to allow a number of punching sequences to suit different laboratory test requirements. Eg. no. of disks to punch into each well, well filling order, cleaning strike.
Typical media is filter paper blotted with blood or saliva samples.
Other media such as plant tissue samples and indicating paper can also be punched.
A light targeting system illuminates the punch areas on the sample prior to punching to allow the sample paper to be correctly positioned.
Normal activation of the puncher is by a foot or hand switch. An optional Autotrigger unit can be installed to automatically sense the presence of the sample media, and then activates the punch. (Also has adjustable auto delay setting.)
Each sample is tracked using a barcode reader which allows an output file to be saved for patient identification, with details of each sample and the location of each punched sample in the plate or test tube.

A low pressure air system aids in stripping the punched disks from the cutting edge of the punch.
An optoelectronic sensing system is integrated into the punching mechanism to detect that each disk has fallen from the punch through to the sample plate surface. The punching mechanism will automatically re-punch a number of times until the disk has been detected.
Operation will stop if a disk has not been detected and software prompts the user to continue or to visually inspect the disk presence.
An optional dust extraction system is available for most models that uses a vacuum pump to continuously remove airborne dust from the sample punching area. The extracted air is passed through a filter which is easily cleaned or replaced.
An air humidifier system minimizes the effects of static electricity and assists in reliable transport of the disks into the wells of the sample trays.
Quick Release Punch and Die Set (Mark 4) allows for quick and easy removal of the punch by laboratory operator, either to change punch size or for cleaning purposes.
